The short-beaked common dolphin is a cetacean that is widespread in temperate seas. It is a playful animal that moves in groups and likes to leap out of the water ahead of ships' bows. About 2 meters long and slender in build, it swims very fast. The beak or rostrum is short and thin to feed on schooling fish such as sardines and anchovies.
