STORY: Dolphin Mosaic: The brilliant Carthaginian General Hannibal Barca was finally defeated in the Battle of Zama in 202BC leading to the beginning of eight centuries of Roman occupation in Carthage (todays Tunisia). As well as developing infrastructure, architecture, philosophy, and forms of government, in the city of El Djem, the Romans created many artworks especially mosaics and ceramics. While El Djem is most famous for its 3rd Century Roman Amphitheatre the archaeological Museum houses a unique collection of Roman Mosaics dating from the 3rd and 4th Century AD. These Mosaics mostly depict Mythological personages, abstract elements and Fauna. The Dolphin image from the house of Dolphins derives from the 3rdCentury Roman Mosaic of a Nymph lying on a sea horse accompanied by two Dolphins. For this scarf the faded mosaic was enriched with the lively colours of the Dolphin’s underwater world.
