STORY: After many successes in battles against the Roman Empire the Roman Empire the brilliant Carthaginian General Hannibal Barca was finally defeated in the Battle of Zama in 202BC leading to the beginning of eight centuries of Roman occupation in Carthage (todays Tunisia). The Romans created many artworks especially mosaics and ceramics. This Scarf “Ganymede” is an Ancient Roman Mosaic from the 2nd Century. In Greek mythology Ganymede being the most beautiful of the mortals was abducted by the eagle of the Greek God Zeus and taken to the home of the Gods at Mount Olympus. He was then given eternal youth and immortality, and served as the cupbearer to the Gods. The original mosaic is titled “The Rape of Ganymede”.
